Girl Scout Promise

During the first two meetings, the Daisies will be learning about what Girl Scouts are and what Daisies are. They will also be working on earning their Promise Center (the blue center patch for their smocks). To do this, they will need to learn the Girl Scout Promise:

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

I know that for some this promise might need some extra explanations, and I encourage you to talk with your daughters about it and to help them start memorizing it now, if possible.

We have our own family interpretation of the line "To serve God and my country," and I will try not to spend too much time with these 4 and 5 year olds interpreting what it means to them. If you have any strong feelings, please let me know so I can try to take them into consideration.

Splash!

We had a great time at the splash party! I'm looking forward to getting to know the four girls that are currently signed up to be in Daisies. I think we are going to have a lot of fun!

Email Lists and Calendar

There are two email lists for the troop, and I ask that the parents of all girls participating in Daisies be on these lists to ensure that announcements are easy to make. General troop announcements will be sent out on the main list while Daisy information (such as information about what we will be doing) will be sent out on the Daisy list only.

The troop calendar will be sent out by email on the general list and will be available in the files section of the two troop email lists. I will also try to update the calendar section of the Daisy YahooGroup to reflect what activities we will work on each week. In addition, if you use goolge calendars, let me know as I keep a copy there for myself and can add you to the calendar sharing list.

Registration

Participating girls that will be five by the first of January are required to register and pay the $10 registration fee. We also ask that any adult who will participate in any way register as well. Dana has the forms and will provide them at the organizational meeting next week.

In addition, the council asks that each family contribute $40 towards the annual fund. If that is more than your family can afford, please give what you can.

We will allow younger girls to participate (those that will turn 5 in the spring) and earn the center and petals, but they will have to wait until next year, when they will be second year Daisies, to be able to wear a Daisy pin and earn the World Trefoil pin.

Daisy Uniforms

I would prefer it, but will not require it, that each girl participating has a Daisy smock. If you are handy with a sewing machine or even can get some blue fabric to cut a head hole and make a smock, that would be excellent. Or, they available for about $12 at the Badge and Sash at the Girl Scout Volunteer Service Center on the I-85N access road just north of N. Druid Hill Road.

A undecorated smock will be fine as it appears that the troop numbers and flag are not required. I have bought these for Chloe's smock nonetheless. It has been pointed out that having the troop numbers on the smock is a good idea to help the girls feel even more a part a troop as a whole.

The daisy petals that the girls will earn will be provided by the troop. Please do not buy these and attach them to the unifrom. They, along with the center, must be earned.

The yellow insignia tab and Daisy pin will be awarded at the investiture to girls that are registered. To be able to register, a girl needs to be 5 years old by the first of December. We will allow younger girls to participate (those that will turn 5 in the spring) and earn petals, but they will have to wait until next year, when they will be second year Daisies, to be able to wear a Daisy pin.

The World Trefoil pin will be awarded to any registered Girl Scout that participates in the Phoenix Rising Service Unit's Thinking Day, which will likely be on a Sunday in February.

A nice explanation of the smock and its insignia is available on the Girl Scout website.

Preparations

I've set up the troop email list and gone to the Service Unit meeting.

Last night, I googled about Daisy activities and bookmarked a lot of sites.

Today we picked up poster board, Sharpies, crayons and supplies to make "Girl Scout Law" bracelets.
